Commonplacing

So what’s going on here?

I plan to use this place to share links, snippets, images, fragments, current reading and passing thoughts. I can’t promise anything except that I find what I share interesting at the time of sharing; it might not be any deeper than that.

One reason for this is to reclaim some attention time from social media. Well-curated social feeds open my mind to writers, thinkers and stories I’d never otherwise see; all social platforms also exact a toll in attention and originality of reaction. So this is also an exercise in reading with greater intent and direction, leavened with a little suspicion about Big Tech’s ability to structure what we perceive as our free choice.

There will not be much long-form writing from me here. My personal rule is generally that if a thought easily fills out two paragraphs it probably ought to be worked up and published somewhere serious. My long-suffering editors know just how long my paragraphs can be, though.

Is this blogging? Maybe. An early modern analogue for this: a commonplace book, a method of organising knowledge which seems to yearn forward to hypertext.

Needless to say, this is also a standing invitation to send me anything that really sets your head alight.
